CHAPTER 12

Once the screen went black, Rachel leaned back in her chairs and breathed out deeply. Darryl rubbed his eyes.

Darryl looked at Rachel, making a gesture that said just what the fuck did we watch.

“Clinically, I have some thoughts," said Rachel. "Should the two of us debrief before we meet with Bagg?”

“I think that’s for the best. I have two patients scheduled that I need to see shortly. How about we reconvene tomorrow morning, say six? And we can approach Bagg with our suggestions before either of us see David for another session?”

“Works for me,” Rachel replied, as she ejected the DVD and turned off the system. They left the room, one after the other, which did a solid job of calming them both. Darryl said his goodbyes as he headed down the hallway, towards his office.

Rachel stood a minute, trying to play back what it was that they’d watched and what it was that she saw. She understood that these were not the same things, but she needed to do her best to compartmentalize each and find the grey area in between to give her the closest idea of ‘what happened.’ Either way, she knew that David killed Father Burke in a horrific manner, but a part of her still wondered if that was the David on the video, the one that she’d been interviewing. She thought back to when he looked at the camera, as though he were looking at her as he prepared to do what he did. And that David, yes, that David, the one that seemingly knew more than he should… that David was there, and Rachel needed to decide to what extent he was playing a part and to what extent he was telling the truth.

And thinking about that, after having watched that footage, filled her with the deepest fear she’d ever felt.

But as she prepared to go to her office, she paused, leaned back against the door to the room, needing a solid presence behind her. A flicker. There it was. Something else that she’d caught on the video. Something that she hadn’t comprehended at first. As though another, larger, figure had also been present when David had appeared onscreen. She shuddered, goosebumps covering her arms. There had been another presence there.

Not only that, but she also remembered what David had asked of Father Burke. It would be something she’d need to ask him about in their next meeting.

When you found me, you took from me what I cherished. Where is my book?

She immediately thought back to an interview she’d conducted with Father Gio only a few weeks after David had arrived.
